How We Can Help Feed The Hungry

By Aprildangelo On September 8, 2009 No Comments

fnbbellybannerOk so maybe it’s not everyone’s  top priority or concern. But In times like these a little help goes a long way.  And if everyone does something to help you’ll discover the benefits and true meaning of “it’s more blessed to give than to receive.”  Many people are aware of the hunger crisis going on right now in other countries.  But were you aware of the hunger crisis going on right now in your own country?  With so many more adults and children alike facing the reality of homelessness, hunger is just the inevitable that goes along with that.

My 4 year old son starts preschool today. And as I was listening to the radio the other day I actually heard a commercial stating the devastating number of children also starting school; children now living on the streets. They may not even know where they will be sleeping tonight let alone where their next meal will come from.

Because our children are precious and they really are our future this story I heard on the radio just keeps tugging at my heart.  So this article is just to help bring awareness of that fact and talk about how we can help change it.

FACT: U.S. residents throw away nearly 1 billion pounds of food every year. (That’s almost 3,000 pounds per second)

FACT: That would be enough to feed 60 billion people

FACT: At the same time over 35 million Americans are hungry or on the edge of hunger.

FACT: Greatest at risk families include those with children, single women or single parent families, and those with incomes below the poverty line.

FACT: We as a nation have an over abundance of food, we just waste a lot of it.

FACT: We recycle half of all used paper, a third of all used metal, but only 2 percent of leftover food.

Important to note ~ There is a 1996 law that protects donors from liability for tainted food in the spirit of encouraging food recovery rather than waste. Go to usda.gov and type in good samaritan food donation act into the search box.

What Can We Do?
Cook with leftovers. There are many recipe collections, such as The Use It Up Cookbook by Catherine Kitcho (Cumberland House, 2003), that have great ideas.

Buy Fresh Food More Frequently
Learning to utilize your freezer better and buying smaller amounts that will not spoil in the fridge is a great choice.

Spread The Word
Talking to your local merchants in stores and restaurants pointing them toward the EPA’s publication “Waste Not/Want Not” (epa.gov). This is filled with information on food recycling options.  In nearly every case it’s cheaper and more cost effective to donate leftover food rather than pay someone to haul it away.

Keep Mosquitoes at Bay the Natural Way

By Aprildangelo On September 3, 2009 No Comments

Lavender

“natural mosquito repellent”

If you don’t like using those chemical mosquito repellents that absorb into your bloodstream and can actually cause brain cell damage.   Specifically I am referring to products that contain DEET.

Well neither do I.

So here are some natural alternatives to chase away your mosquito blues.

Garlic~ Eating garlic whether fresh or cooked is an easy way to keep them at bay.  Or even setting it on the table when you’re outside eating works.

Neem oil~ This oil is extracted from a plant grown in India.  And according to researchers at the Malaria Institute there, it has been found to be more effective than even DEET in repelling the little guys.  This has been confirmed by both the American Mosquito Control Association and the US National research Council.

Citronella~ More mainstream and typically available anywhere outdoor home and garden supplies are sold.  Just by some candles or citronella oil.

Catnip~ A lesser known weapon is just growing catnip in your outdoor eating or lounging areas.  It’s been found by an Iowa State University research group to be 10 times more effective than products containing DEET.

Lavender~  Whether you have sachet containing the dry herb, you have it growing around you outdoor lounging area, or you bring out some essential oil of lavender.  It is a tried and true, great smelling way to detour mosquitoes.

Soy Oil~ This is also highly effective.  Soy oil is easy to find and inexpensive making it another great natural alternative.

Although it may seem convenient to just grab and go when it comes to purchasing mosquito repellents I would definately think twice.  With all the research out there revealing the health risks and dangers of using products containing DEET it is definately worth your time to find yourself a healthy alternative.

10 Easy Ideas on How to Get Rid of Black Mold

“how to get rid of black mold”

The truth is you could literally fill a library with the books and official research reports written on the subject of toxins in your home.  If you or anyone in your family suffers from allergies or any other unexplained physical symptoms this could be why.  Many popular building materials, including plywood, particle board, treated lumber, adhesives, paint, paint thinners, insulation, paint strippers, carpets, and carpet pads-even decorative paraffin candles-contain highly toxic materials such as formaldehyde, chloroform, lead vapor, arsenic, and countless other toxins.  They can enter your living area as gaseous vapors and increase the toxic load of the body.  Add to that the problem of toxic black mold, and you have a very toxic home.

Mold is a serious problem that can have devastating effects on our health.  It thrives in damp and humid environments.  So the best way to keep it at bay is to keep your home as dry and ventilated as possible.

Here are 10 easy ideas on how to get rid of black  mold:

  • Check your closets for items like shoes that retain moisture.
  • It’s important to use an exhaust fan in kitchens and bathrooms to pull out excess moisture.
  • Use a disinfectant or bleach to clean window-sills, bath tubs, showers and shower curtains at least once a month.
  • Be sure to keep your house dry and well ventilated.
  • In more humid areas use a dehumidifier to keep the humidity levels inside your home below 50%.  Mold increases in higher humidity.
  • Seal off and dry out damp areas, such as attics, basements, and crawl spaces.
  • Be sure your clothes dryer vents moist air to the outside.
  • Store fire wood outside the home.
  • Check under sinks and around plumbing for leaks and repair any water-damaged areas from leaking roofs to basements.
  • Remove carpeting from any concrete floors, especially in the basement.

How To Excel in Your Season of Life

Recognition Is Key To Excellence

There are three general phases in life.  First lets go over what these are.
Then you can identify which phase you are in.  This may prove to be helpful
in recognizing what to do now and what to do next.  It’s important to know every phase of life is not the same.  LOL, maybe you already figured that one out.  It is just as vitally important to know that neither should we try to make each phase the same.  Ideally, one’s life should follow a pattern.  The main focus should go from learning to earning to returning.

Here’s what I mean:

Learn; phase one in life. The early stages of life should find you
focused on exploring your talents, discovering your purpose, and learning
your trade. This stage of life typically takes place during the teens and
twenties although it can go well through the thirties.  The exact time frame
isn’t important. What is important here is recognizing and accepting the
time of life set aside where learning is the primary objective.  It’s also
important to realize this so one isn’t tempted to take shortcuts to
financial gain and totally miss out on the big picture of their life.

Earn; phase two in life.  At this point in time if a person is on track
with their purpose, they have learned their trade well.  They also practice it well.  As the obvious hope is that they are able to earn a good living.  Of one’s choice of profession will greatly impact their earning power. This season of life for many when their earning is most effective occurs during their thirties, forties, and fifties. This is the phase of life when one should strive to take care of their family and prepare for their future.

Return; phase three in life.  It is simply wisdom that we should always try to be generous no matter what our age is. But if one has worked hard and planned well, they just may enter that stage of life that proves to be the most rewarding. This is the phase when one may choose to give back to others.  This stage usually takes place during the fifties, sixties, seventies, and beyond.

Of course these phases are generalizations, but they do present a pattern for which to strive.  If you are reading this and you are young, then you may be eager to leave the learning phase.  But remember to be patient.  For the more diligently you go after phase one, the greater your potential to maximize your other phases.  Perhaps you are older and you feel you didn’t lay a good foundation for yourself, do not despair.  Simply continue to learn and grow.  You can still finish well.  But if you give up you can never go up.

How To Set Your Priorities

Principles For Prioritizing                                                                                                     27359.jpg  I love that quote, “It’s not how hard you work, its how smart you work.”  The valuable truth is, as you move from success to success, or glory to glory there are things you will have to do well.  Having the capacity and skill to tend to three or four high priority projects successfully is an absolute must.

Although this may seem rather daunting at times for all of us, it is possible to become skilled at this and actually enjoy doing it.

It will prove to be very rewarding from so many angles.  Not only will you get better at achieving more.  But you will learn to manage your time more wisely and end up with less wasted time and more free time.  It is really a powerful skill to share with those you work with as well.

Here are your basics in four easy to follow steps.  How to simplify and redefine your priorities for a lifetime of success.

  • High Importance ~ High Urgency: These should be your number one priority; take care of these first.
  • High Importance ~ Low Urgency: Be sure to set deadlines to complete these and work these projects into your daily routine.
  • Low Importance ~ High Urgency:  These fall into the outsourcing category.  These should require very little personal involvement to get done. So you should be able to assign or delegate these tasks to someone fittingly skilled for this.
  • Low Importance ~ Low Urgency:  These would be the monotonous and tedious tasks like filing and such.  Set this aside and tend to it in One half hour blocks every week.  Or have an assistant do it for you.  Or better yet don’t even waste your time giving it a second thought. It’s possible that after a little investigation you may discover it can be put off indefinitely.

A life in which anything goes will eventually be a life in which nothing goes.

Positive Habits For Transforming Your Life

How To Plant The Seeds Of Success
28653.jpg Great Habits Take Us Firmly By The Hand And Lead Us Into A Radical Life Change. If this sounds like something you don’t want to experience I recommend that you stop reading now.

Your still here,…      Congratulations!  That’s a great way to get started.

Habits are really choices we choose to make over and over.  We have to make decisions from the inside out. Until we don’t have to think about the right choice; it just becomes automatic.

The choices we make become habits.  These habits form our character.  Our character directs our destiny.

As we make choices we are planting seeds. Are you waiting for a mighty oak tree to mature when you’ve only planted grass seeds.  It’s important to recognize that life is made up of days; and these days are made up of choices.

Here are some practical habits for transforming your life.

  • Be a cheerful giver: The more you give away the more you have.  It really is more blessed to give than to receive.
  • Always forgive right away.  Life is too short to waste your energy on this and you only multiply the pain when you don’t forgive.
  • Be supportive and confidant towards others; never miss an opportunity to encourage someone. We all feel stronger and more capable when we’ve been praised.
  • Spontaneous applies to that which is done so naturally that it seems to come without prompting or premeditation. Have a do it now attitude and be spontaneous.
  • Have a thankful heart.  When you know God is the provider of everything it makes it easier to be thankful even for the little things.
  • Believe in people.  Look for the best in every circumstance. When you are looking for the best in circumstances and people, you will likely find it.
  • Be enthusiastic about life.  You know what they say; enthusiasm is contagious.
  • Laugh alot. Smile alot. Challenges are there to help you grow.  Learn how to laugh in the face of adversity.
  • Think of creative ways to be a blessing.  Actually look for people to help.
  • Look at things like this; if you must be paranoid, just believe the whole world is conspiring to do only good things for you!
  • Decide for yourself to truly enjoy life.

These may seem like small choices…. but that is what our days and ultimately our lives are made up of.

Don’t just live:  Choose to live well.

How To Simplify Your Life To Achieve Your Dreams

By Aprildangelo On March 5, 2009 5 Comments

Focus Your Energy And Cultivate Your Dreams

tiger.jpg It is important as we walk through life to cultivate our dreams by eliminating the distractions. Goal setting can become very challenging when we don’t seem to have the time to accomplish the goals.  This usually results in frustration that leads to unfulfilled purpose and unsatisfied lives.

In light of life and of business we are often challenged to make the choice between high-volume and high-impact. What I mean by this is multi-tasking and mass producing a little bit of everything kind of lifestyle.  VS.  The more focused and simplified yet high impact approach.

Of course it would be nice to always be surrendered to the latter but life has a way of being complicated and messy at times.  It is from this reality that I would like to approach the subject.

Focus and passion is your doorway to “The Zone”. This phenomenon I am referring to is a place Tiger Woods practically lives in on the golf course.  This is a place that welcomes anyone and everyone.  A place where time does not exist, and because passion and focus are leading the way you will inevitably become your most productive self.

If you are not passionate about the task you are working on grant yourself permission to move on to what you are passionate about.

Passion is like adrenaline.  So, the more passionate you are; the more energy you put into it and the more joy you get out of it.  In this state of mind we lose ourselves in something and become more effective and ultimately more satisfied as a whole.

When you can decide on the few things that are the most important to you, it then becomes easy to eliminate the rest.

  • Decide on a task you are passionate about.  If you are really not interested in what you are doing you won’t be able to get in “the zone”.  Be sure to choose something challenging.  If it’s too easy you will get bored.  If it’s too difficult it will be hard to get in the zone.
  • Remove all distractions.  This includes phones, clutter, etc.  The less you have to think about the better.
  • Finally, lose yourself in the task. Forget about everything else and totally zone in on what you are doing.  Be mentally stirred up excited about it.

Remember “The Zone” is where it all happens.  If you could bottle this up and sell it you would make a fortune.  But this is ultimately a self achieved strategy; something each of us must do for ourselves.

“The Zone” equals effective execution of your daydreams!    ….lol

May you experience the fulfillment of your dreams and continue to dream of new ones.

Time Management Techniques in Business

“Time Management Techniques in Business”Time Management Techniques in Business

Why is Time Management Important?  Why should we recognize that time is a gift?  Because the most major difference between the prosperous and the poor is the valuing of time.  When driving through a ghetto one might see healthy men and women sitting outside on the steps simply talking for hours.  There would be garbage strewn about and disorder would be rampant.  They’ve chosen to invest their time talking while the prosperous are hard at work.

A major difference exists between the poor, the pauper and the prosperous.  That difference is the management of time.  You must be persuaded concerning the value of time if you intend on changing your financial worth.  24 hours each day are given to the poor.  And 24 hours each day are given to the rich.  Both are given the same gift from God…24 hours a day.  Each and every person has received the same amount of time.  The outcome relies on how you choose to invest your time.

Here is your time management lesson plan:

  • You will find that anything significant in your life will require the investment of time.
  • It’s possible to increase the mistakes in your life when hurrying too much.
  • Investing time in preparation will abundantly multiple your reward.
  • Every time you make an appointment with someone your attitude toward time is revealed.  Not only does precision communicate your respect for time but punctuality extends the message that time matters to you.
  • It is your responsibility to train those around you to respect your time.  You do so by respecting their own time as well.
  • It will always require the investment of time to execute a successful negotiation.  Those who overcome the temptation to hurry…always control the transaction.

Now let’s go over a few time management techniques in business.

  1. It is of the utmost importance to keep a list of your goals in front of you at all time.  What you see will determine what you pursue.
  2. It is important to establish a time limit for each appointment or goal.  Instead of saying “I will see you around 2:00″, set the appointment for 2:00 – 2:20.  Precision electrifies any environment.
  3. Be in constant forward motion toward your next appointment or goal.
  4. Be sure to mark those who consistently disrespect your time.  When someone does not respect your time they will not respect your wisdom either.

Why is time management important?…When you recognize that time truly is a gift you will learn to manage it wisely.  Your productivity will multiple, your financial worth will increase and every moment of your relationships will be more valuable.
