How To Approach Social Networking Sites As A Marketer
Or Should I say,
How Not To Approach Social Networking Sites As A Marketer
It’s really a simple revelation. Although people and marketers sometimes just don’t get it when it comes to these sites. These are socializing and gleaning sites. These sites are made to fill a void. Whether its looking to learn or share its hard to get very far without properly recognizing this.
Most marketers join these sites looking to immediately recruit everyone they meet. So you can see herein lies the dilemma. Not many are actually looking to join right away but most are interested in learning how to enhance and grow their own team.
So to effectively engage yourself and make these sites really work for you, you must think differently. “…Ask not what your social networking site can do for you, but what can you do for your social networking site.”
It’s as simple as this; what are you giving to the people on that site. When you are a giver rather than a taker you will set yourself apart from rest. You will change from simply average to really having a sphere of influence that can have practical and remarkable effects on your overall business.
Because so many are there to recruit; keep in mind this is a perfect opportunity to share tools and tactics to help others achieve the success they are looking for. Not everyone is looking to join your company but many are going to be interested in an e-book perhaps or a tutorial revealing how to grow their own business. I’ll go over funded proposals in a future article.
But for now, be patient, remember to have fun. And be sure to spend some of your time simply networking with others and making new friends that span the globe.

This is one of my pet peeves in social networking! Some networkers think they can join networks and spam everyone in the group with the usual hypey “my company/product/comp plan is the best in the history of the world” pitches. I get so many of them, I don’t even read them anymore (and most people don’t). Most groups will toss you out for that but there is always another one right behind them. On Twitter, it will get you blocked and unfollowed very quickly!
As you said, the key to success in social networking is to establish yourself as an expert and offer VALUE to your contacts so that they get to know you and trust you as a leader in the industry. Once they do that, they will recommend you to others which constantly expands your network. Almost all of the top networkers in the industry have used that strategy both offline and online and it has been very effective. Even if your contacts never join you in the business, once you become a recognized trusted leader, you can monetize that position by selling training and coaching programs which is a win-win since it provides further value to your contacts and provides you with monetary rewards for all your efforts.

This is exactly what I have to remind a few of my coaching clients… they are in the social media networks but using the ‘visit my site’ mentality instead of the ‘what can I do for you?’ mentality.
I always encourage providing value and building relationships first, this is where the problem lies with some business owners, they seem to want instant proof that social networks will build there referrals or direct sales, the fact is it takes time to build relationships. The payoff is that the relationships you do build are often long-lasting!
Thanks again for posting.
